Cynthia Durden-Mitchell, a beloved pillar of the community and cherished daughter, wife, and mother, tragically passed away in a devastating car accident in Massapequa, New York, on April 23, 2024. She was 64 years old.
Born on April 27, 1959, Cynthia was the loving daughter of Charles and Juanita Durden, esteemed pastors of the Second Baptist Church of Rockville Center, New York. Growing up in the vibrant community of preachers’ kids that populated Nassau and Suffolk counties during the late 1960s and 1970s, Cynthia embodied the values of faith, compassion, and service from an early age.
Cynthia was a graduate of Southside High School in Rockville Center, where her academic excellence and warm personality endeared her to classmates and teachers alike. She continued her educational journey at Nassau Community College and CW Post University, where she pursued her passion for learning and personal development.
Throughout her professional career, Cynthia made a profound impact in various roles, notably as the Executive Assistant to Mayor Andrew Hardwick of Freeport, New York, in the Nassau County Office of Minority Affairs. Her dedication to public service and advocacy for marginalized communities earned her widespread respect and admiration.
However, Cynthia’s true calling lay in her unwavering commitment to the faith community. She was a dedicated member of the Eastern Baptist Association, where she served as an early president of the Maggie B. Greene Youth Council and the Empire Baptist Missionary Convention. Cynthia’s leadership, kindness, and boundless energy inspired countless individuals and left an indelible mark on those she encountered.
Regarded as the epitome of a preacher’s kid, Cynthia exemplified the values of integrity, humility, and compassion instilled by her parents. Her profound impact on the lives of others was a testament to her unwavering faith and steadfast devotion to serving others.
Cynthia shared over 25 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Theodore Mitchell, who mourns her loss deeply. Their union was blessed with the joy of raising their cherished daughter, Charise, who was the light of Cynthia’s life. As Charise prepares to graduate from high school this spring and embark on the next chapter of her journey in college, she carries with her the enduring legacy of her remarkable mother’s love and guidance.

A memorial service to celebrate Cynthia’s life was held at the South Hempstead Baptist Church of Hempstead, New York where Pastor Philip McDowell provided a stirring eulogy and where she found solace, strength, and community throughout her life.
