The Long Island community mourns the passing of a beloved spiritual leader, the Reverend Doctor Margrie Lewter Simmons, who peacefully departed this life on March 8, 2023. Born on November 5, 1925, in Sebring, FL, to the late Rev. Rufus Cleveland Lewter and Mary Lee Lewter, Pastor Simmons leaves behind a legacy of unwavering faith, compassion, and groundbreaking contributions to the ministry. She is remembered by her two daughters Deborah Simmons and Renee (Reggie) Simmons Hye and a host of other family members and friends.

For years, Rev. Dr. Margrie Lewter Simmons served as the esteemed pastor of the Assembly of Prayer Baptist Church in Roslyn, NY, where she shepherded her congregation with dedication and love. Recently, she made the decision to relocate to Savannah, GA, to reside with her daughter and son-in-law, embodying the same nurturing spirit that characterized her ministry.

A distinguished member of the American Baptist Churches of Metro New York, Pastor Simmons was also a former associate minister at the Hollywood Baptist Church in New York. Her influence extended far beyond the pulpit, as she became a respected figure among her colleagues and congregants alike.

Dr. Simmons, a trailblazer in the realm of “Women in Ministry,” shattered glass ceilings and paved the way for future generations of female clergy. Her commitment to equality, justice, and spiritual guidance earned her respect and admiration throughout her illustrious career.

A 1995 graduate of United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH, Pastor Simmons earned her Doctor of Ministry degree, further solidifying her commitment to scholarship and spiritual leadership. Her pursuit of knowledge and her dedication to her faith were evident in every aspect of her ministry.

The memorial services held in honor of Pastor Simmons were a testament to the impact she had on the lives of those she touched.
