Sixty years ago a nine year old Andy C. Lewter, Jr. joined his parents on a trip to Washington DC to support their family friend, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as he led the March on Washinton rally in August of 1963. Sixty years later Andy C. Lewter, Jr is the pastor of the Hollywood Full Gospel Baptist Cathedral, founding bishop of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship and president of the Ministerial Alliance of North Amityville and Vicinity.
This month Bishop Lewter will return to Washington DC to join Rev. Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King, III for the 60th year celebration of the March on Washington. Bishop Lewter will attend the event as a representative of MANA.
The March of Washington was the seminal event of the 1960’s and very well may have been responsible for much of the civil rights progress of the mid 60’s. The meeting featured the “I Have a Dream” speech that has been recognized as one of the most powerful speeches of the twentieth century.
